Certain circumstances may call for
the production of e-mail messages loaded into Summation as a .PST
file. If the .PST was originally processed in the eDiscovery Console,
it can be produced as a .PST file.
This tutorial explains how to use the Make
an Email (PST) Production tool. This tool should be used when
responding to a court order or request for production where Bates
numbering is not an issue. Microsoft Outlook is required to view
the e-mail messages in the .PST file.
Note: Producing e-mail messages in a .PST
file differs from creating a Summation production set. Doc IDs
are not renumbered with production numbers (Prodno) and Summation
does not produce new production IDs (Prodid).
- Search your loaded e-mail messages from
within the column view of the Core Database to retrieve the
messages that you want to include in the .PST production.
- Review the documents for privilege and
relevance.
Note: You can right-click the summary row number and select
Show PST Information to verify document data. The DocData dialog
box is displayed, showing processing information for the file.
- If you want to produce only a subset
of the e-mail messages, mark the summaries associated with the
e-mail messages that you want to produce.
- From the Summary menu, select Production
Tools and Make an Email (PST) Production.
A prompt is displayed asking you to confirm that you want to
create a .PST file.
- Click Yes.
The Briefcase coreDB Rows dialog box is displayed.
Note: Summation automatically runs the Include Family Summaries
tool, which seeks out the top-level parent e-mail documents
and includes them in your .PST production. For example, if one
of the e-mail messages in your production set was attached to
another e-mail message (the top-level parent), and that parent
message was not displayed in your search, Summation pulls that
parent message into your .PST production. Also, if you have
attachments to e-mail messages in your production set, the e-mail
messages associated with those attachments are also included.
If you marked summaries, only the top-level parents associated
with the production set you chose are added.
- Type a descriptive name for the set in
the Enter Name for New Briefcase box and click OK.
A prompt is displayed asking whether you want to load the .PST
file into Microsoft Outlook for review or if you want to see
the directory where the .PST file is stored. When you are ready
to produce the .PST file to opposing counsel or to provide it
to a third party (such as an expert witness) for review, copy
the .PST file from the location where it is stored to a CD.
