  Summation Tutorial:

Cloning a Database

  Overview:

The Database Clone utility gives you the ability to copy the database structure to another database or location. This is useful when you customize a Summation database (with custom fields, forms, and tables), and want to copy the custom fields, forms, and tables (including lookup tables) to a new case or location, and want to copy the database structure only (copy the fields, forms, and tables without the coded data).

Tutorial Steps

Steps

  1. Open the Summation case that contains the database structure that you want to copy to another case.

  2. From the Options menu, select Utilities.
The Utilities dialog box is displayed.

  3. Click Clone Database.
The Clone Database dialog box is displayed.

  4. Click Browse next to the Database to clone TO box.
The Choose a Database dialog box is displayed.

  5. If you are cloning the database structure into a case and want to overwrite the existing database, then browse to the <Database Name>DB folder located in the Database folder under the case's directory, and select the default database (<Database Name>DB file). The file name is listed in the Database Name box.

    OR

If you are cloning the database structure into a case (or other location) and do not want to overwrite an existing database, then browse to the location where you want to clone the database (for example, in the case name database folder found in the Database folder under the case directory), and type a database name in the Database Name box.

  6. Click OK.
The Clone Database dialog box is redisplayed.

  7. Click OK.
If you selected an existing database as the Database Name to clone to, you are prompted with a message informing you that the selected database exists and asking you if you want to overwrite that database. Click Yes to overwrite the existing database or No to browse to a new location or to enter a new database name. Click OK to proceed.

A prompt is displayed asking you if you want to copy the data in lookup tables too.

  8. Click Yes if you want the shortcuts and descriptions from all lookup tables in the source database copied to the corresponding lookup tables in the target database.

    OR

Click No if you do not want the shortcuts and descriptions from all lookup tables in the source database copied to the corresponding lookup tables in the target database.

The clone process begins, and a message is displayed when the process is complete.

  9. Click OK to exit the dialog box.

  10. Check that the clone process was successful by doing one of the following:

If you cloned to a target case and overwrote the existing database, open the case and make sure the cloned database structure exists.

    OR

If you copied the database structure to a case (or other location) without overwriting an existing database, browse to that location and make sure the database files exist (for example, <Database Name>.SE1, <Database Name>.SE2, <Database Name>.SE3, and <Database Name>.FRM)
