  Summation Installation:

Deploying Summation Blaze LG / iBlaze Network Clients using an MSI

  Overview

Summation Blaze LG products can be purchased as Mobile-edition (also known as stand-alone edition) or Network-edition (also known as concurrent-user edition) product installations. This document only applies to network-edition clients, NOT mobile-edition products.

Installing the network-edition of your Summation product is a two step process (see the installation guide that came with the installation CD-ROM for more details):

  1. Server installation - Appropriate program files are copied to a network server location.

  2. Network Client Installation - Upon completion of the server installation step, the network client component must be installed on the individual workstations.

In order to facilitate more efficient application deployment, in addition to the standard network client "setup.exe" program Summation now offers a network client installation MSI package that can be run interactively or silently.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The MSI package must be matched with the appropriate release of Summation. The current release of Summation is Summation Blaze LG/iBlaze 2.0 December 2002 release (the sw32.exe file has a "modified date" of 12/3/2002). Do not use the MSI with a release version that is different than the release for which it is intended. Failure to correctly match the MSI with the release version will result in unpredictable system performance.

Supported methods of MSI deployment:

Interactive Mode
Silent mode (manual method)
Silent mode (application deployment / "push" deployment)

Interactive mode:
1. Confirm that the appropriate release of your Summation product has been installed on the server. The current release is December 2002 (the sw32.exe file has a "modified date" of 12/3/2002), the MSI properties will reflect the version for which the MSI was designed.
2. Copy the "Summation Blaze LG Client.msi" file to the "Client Setup" directory in the server installation directory on the network if it is not already present.
3. Logon to the target network client workstation with a username that is a member of the "Power Users" or "Administrators" group (only necessary for Windows NT\2000\XP systems).
4. From the workstation desktop, browse to the "Summation Blaze LG Client.msi" file on the network. Double-click on the file.
5. Follow the directions for installation. If step 1 was performed properly, the default values in the installation wizard will contain the proper parameters.

Silent mode (manual method):
This method can be used to run the network client installation silently from the command prompt.

4. Open a command prompt (DOS box) and change your working path to the directory containing the "Summation Blaze LG Client.msi" file.
5. Run "Summation Blaze LG Client.msi" /qn . This will execute the installation silently using information contained in the "sw.ver" file located in the same client setup directory.
6. Upon completion, a new shortcut will be located on the desktop.

Silent mode (application deployment / "push" deployment):

The Summation Blaze LG network client MSI can also be deployed silently using a number of application deployment technologies such as Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory, Microsoft SMS, or other deployment programs that utilize the windows installer service (.msi files). The key to silent deployment is to insure the sw.ver file from the "Client Setup" sub-directory is in the same directory as the MSI file upon execution.

1. Confirm that the appropriate release of your Summation product has been installed on the server. The current release is December 2002 (the sw32.exe file has a "modified date" of 12/3/2002), the MSI properties will reflect the version for which the MSI was designed.
2. Copy the "Summation Blaze LG Client.msi" file to the "Client Setup" sub-directory in the network server application directory if it is not already present. If a location other than the default "Client Setup" directory is desired, simply copy the "Summation Blaze LG Client.msi" and "sw.ver" files together to that alternate network directory location.
3. Configure the application deployment program (i.e. Active Directory, SMS, etc.) to deploy the Summation Blaze LG Client MSI from the "Client Setup" sub-directory or the alternate network directory location as determined by step 2.
