  Summation Installation:

Deployment of Summation 5.21 via Citrix

  Instructions:

The first thing to know about deploying any version of Summation™ on a thin client network is that the installation procedure is basically the same as it would be for any other NT/2000 network. You need to make sure that when shortcuts to the executable are created, that "run this application in it's own memory space" is selected.

As far as memory requirements for the server are concerned, the basic requirements as described in the installation guide should be followed, as well as the standard processor and memory guidelines set forth by Citrix and Microsoft. For the process of sizing your server, Summation™ users should be considered as 'Heavy' users, and 5.21 is regarded as a 16 bit program.

Summation™ should be installed via the Citrix server (by loading it on the Citrix server and pointing the installation wizard to the application server when prompted) if the program is to be installed on a different server. Summation™ needs to be installed while the server is in install mode via the Add/Remove applet or the command line utility.

The next step is to decide where the data files (cases) are to be kept, and set the Master Case Directory. The Master Case Directory defines the network location where new cases are created. To change the Master Case Directory, or locate already existing Summation cases, use the Case Customize tool. If you have chosen to install the Demonstration case, you may find the @P symbol instead of drive letters in the Case Customize locations. If so, just browse to the Case Directory of the demonstration case and click OK, the paths will return to normal.

After the install is complete and the configuration has been thoroughly tested according to guidelines in the Microsoft/Citrix literature, Summation™ becomes available for use via the Citrix network.

Note: Summation version 5.21 should not be run as a published application.

Steps for Installing Summation™ on a Citrix Network

This is a set of general guidelines for installing Summation™ version 5.21 on a thin client network. Please note that these are not rules, but guidelines based on standard procedures outlined by Microsoft, Citrix and Summation™.

  1. Make sure your server is in installation mode. To put the server into install mode, either run setup from Add/Remove Programs or go to the command prompt and run CHANGE USER /INSTALL.

  2. Install Summation™ from the server console. If you run into trouble when installing from a mapped network drive, this is due to a problem in certain builds of Windows 2000. The installation can be launched from a UNC, or you can check the Microsoft website for any necessary updates. The latter option is to be preferred, because UNC's aren't supported by all sections of version 5.21.

  3. If you chose not to reboot after the installation, make sure to return the server to "execute mode" by closing Add/Remove Programs or by running CHANGE USER /EXECUTE at the command prompt.
  4. Test the application, both from the server as an administrator and from a client session.

  5. Create a server image.

Steps for changing the Master Case Directory:

  1. Select Case/Customize.

  2. Double click in the Master Case Directory line or click on the Change button.

  3. Use the browse control to select the new Master Case Directory

Summary

Firms that have implemented this Citrix/Summation architecture have been happy with the increase in performance and flexibility, and lack of problems needing technical assistance. Summation™ Tech Support does not offer support for networking and operating system problems, and if any issues that tech support is contacted about are determined to be network or OS issues, the user will be redirected to the person responsible for the Network/OS involved.
