Y2K Date Entry Tips

  Overview:

Summation’s internal date format handles all dates from 1800 to 3000, as well as having the ability to contain "fuzzy" dates. Summation Blaze for Windows has always permitted the entry of the year component of a date as either 2-digit or 4-digit. This is true whether your date output (or, display) format shows all four digits of the year or just two.

In versions prior to 5.0, all 2-digit years were interpreted to be in the 20th century; in the current versions (5.0 through 5.21 as of today) the default is to interpret 00 as the year 2000 and all other 2-digit years as in the 20th century. For example, entering 1/1/90 interprets the year as 1990 and entering 1/1/05 interprets the year as 1905, while entering 1/1/00 interprets the year as 2000.

It is possible to change the interpretation of the 2-digit entry of a year on a per Case basis in versions 5.0 and greater [Note that this has been added as an aid to date entry, and that all earlier versions of Summation can distinguish between the years in 1900 and 2000]. This is sometimes called defining a year pivot point. Those 2-digit years up to the pivot point are interpreted as 21st century dates, while those equal to or greater than the pivot are interpreted as 20th century dates. For example, setting the pivot point to 45 means entering 00 through 44 as the year component is interpreted to be 2000 through 2044 and entering 45 through 99 is interpreted to be 1945 through 1999. You can think of the pivot date as the first number used for the 20th century (although a pivot point of 0 is a special case).

The RollYY pivot value is set in the SWCASE.INI file found in each Summation Case’s Case Directory and is therefore CASE SPECIFIC. This lets you set the pivot point depending upon the most common document dates found in each case.

In Version 5.21 you can set the RollYY pivot value by doing as follows:

  1. Choose Defaults from the Options menu item.

  2. Choose the Database tab of the Defaults if it is not already chosen.
  • Click on the Year Entry Tips button in the lower right corner.

  • The Year Entry Tips dialog appears. Click the Yes button to change the pivot point.
  •
  • In the dialog provided, enter the 2 digit pivot value you desire and press enter.
  •
  • The Year Entry Tips dialog reappears, indicating the new pivot point. Click on No to close the dialog.

  • Click on OK to close Database Defaults.
  • In Versions 5.0 through 5.2, use a text editor such as NotePad to edit the SWCASE.INI file:

    1. Choose Customize from the Case menu and note the Case Directory.

    2. Exit Summation.

    3. Open the SWCASE.INI located in the Case Directory note in step #1 with NotePad or another text editor.
    • At the end of the file add the line "[MISC]"

    • Beneath the "[MISC]" line, add the line "RollYY=## where ## equals the 2-digit pivot point.

    • Save the INI file and exit.

    • Run Summation and the changes will be in effect.
