Copy Case is a Summation add-on program that only works for 32 bit operating systems. The following case copying method can be used with all versions of Windows. It can be used whether the case is being moved between laptops and desktops, or stand-alones and networks that have different
installs of Summation. The Target case or computer is the case (computer) that needs to have the data transferred into it, and the Source case (computer) contains the material that needs to be transferred.
- Create the Target case on the Target computer by using the <Case/New> menu selection. This will create an empty case on the computer that needs to have the data moved onto it's drive. Open <Case/Customize>, and write down the case directory path, we will need it in step 2.
- Load another case, and then exit Summation on the Target Computer. Go to the Windows Explorer or File Manager. Locate the folder (directory) associated with this case by referring to the path taken down in step 1. Delete everything inside this case folder (including the tran and *.sw folders), leaving only the folder that holds the case name.
- If your Target computer is physically attached to the Source computer, go to step 4. If you are not attached through a network, cable, or laplink setup, go to the Source computer and put a disk in the diskette (or Zip) drive. If this diskette is not empty, erase it. Open the Windows Explorer or File Manager and copy everything under the folder with the case
name onto the diskette. You should not copy the case name folder itself, we already have one on the Target computer. Go back to the Target computer, insert the disk into the drive, and copy everything into the Target directory, by highlighting the casename folder and going <file/copy copy from> A:\*.* (if your diskette drive is the A: drive). Now go to step 5.
- Since you are attached to the Source computer (you should still be in the File Manager of your Target computer), go to <file/copy, copy from> and enter the path of the case on your Source computer (or browse your way there) and copy everything within the case folder. Be careful not to copy the case folder itself, or you will have a case called abc.0 containing
everything you need, instead of putting your data where it should go.
- On the Target computer, open Summation. Go to your case selection screen and select your newly created case. If in the process of it loading you get "can't find" or "can't open" messages about the database or note file, don't panic. Just go to the case customize screen, double click in the database name field (the part that has the path), browse to and
select the database again. Do the same for the note file if necessary. Your case should now be established and functional on the Target computer.
