Summation Blaze stores your case database, transcripts, transcript annotations, and images in different files and locations. When copying only select parts of a case, it helps to understand this underlying structure. This section details the components that make up a Summation case and where the data is stored. For any case in Summation, select Customize
from the Case menu for an outline of your cases filenames and locations.
When you create a case in Summation, it creates a case directory in which to store related case files. Summation places this sub-directory within the Master Case Directory. The index files created when you Blaze your transcripts and database are stored here. So is the Transcript Format Table (TFT), a binary file that keeps track of the transcripts and
their format settings in this case. The TFT is always named SUM.TFT. Case Organizer outlines (HTML files) are also stored in the case directory. If you have ocrBase, the (FTX) file containing your full text documents is stored in the case directory. If the case name is less than eight characters, then the case directory acquires the same name. If the case name exceeds eight characters
(usually true), then Summation creates a case directory name using the first letter of each word of the case name. Note this in the example below, where the case name is “Summation Demonstration Case”, so the case directory is SDC.
The directory within your case directory that contains your transcripts. When you load transcripts into your case, Summation copies them to this directory. The transcript directory is always called “Tran”. Note File Name Summation places the Note File for your case into the case directory. Its name is the same as the case directory, with the letters
“NT” added to the end. The note file consists of three files, numbered 1-3, all with the extension SE{1-3} as of 5.0 or RBF prior to 5.0.

Summation names the database similarly to the note file. Its name is the same as the case directory, with the letters “DB” added to the end. The database also consists of three files, numbered 1-3. In version 5.0 and higher, these files have the extension SE{1-3}. Prior to version 5.0, they have the extension RBF. These files reside in the case directory.
Any database created in Summation’s versions 4.5 or higher also uses a file with the extension FRM that stores all form information for this database (for forms created in Summation for Windows).

The location to which Summation copies any case data written to file. For example, when you write Search Results or Database summaries to file, Summation puts the file(s) in the Output Location unless you specify otherwise. Image Location The default location where Summation stores the images associated with your case. When you start a new case, Summation
creates a subdirectory, “Images”, within the case directory for this purpose. Master Case Directory
The directory within which Summation creates all new case directories. The default location is the program directory, however, you can customize your master case directory to point to a separate location.
How to View the Case Customize Dialog?
- Select the case whose directory and filename structure you want to view.
- From the Case menu, select Customize.
